Lady Trojan cagers top Starpoint, 64-54

Amanda Weiner finished one assist shy of what would have been an impressive triple-double Friday in guiding West Seneca East’s girls basketball team to a 64-54 win over Starpoint.

Weiner scored 22 points and pulled down an astonishing 24 rebounds to go along with her nine assists to record yet another solid all-around effort. East needed all of Weiner’s efforts, as Starpoint did all it could to keep within striking distance of the Lady Trojans throughout the contest. As it was, East was unable to really gain any separation from the Lady Spartans until halfway through the fourth quarter, which is when the Lady Trojans clamped down at both ends of the court to finish off their 22-16 effort in the final stanza.

“It was a great battle, a back and forth, well-coached chess match by both coaches,” East coach Ryan Colbert said. “We just finally dug deep in the fourth quarter and found a way to put some baskets together – we ultimately started to fire on all cylinders in the second half – to where we negated the defensive changes they made and came out with the win.”

Kelsey Kaufman chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and a block for East, while Hailey Cenname (5 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) and Sarah Eisenmenger (2 rebounds) each added seven points for the Lady Trojans.

East (11-5, 5-4 ECIC II) returned to action Wednesday at Williamsville East, but information about that contest was not available at press time. The Lady Trojans close out their regular season with three games in four days next week, beginning with Tuesday’s clash with Amherst.

“That Starpoint game was exactly what we needed as a team after a hard-fought Hamburg loss in our previous outing,” Colbert said. “It was exactly what we needed in order to take a jump in the right direction this week, starting with our trip to Williamsville East. That’s going to be another great battle against another good team. These last couple of games can be critical when it comes down to playoffs.”
