Together, we can defeat cancer

I never underestimate the heart and generosity of the people of West Seneca.

Last year, my dear friend, Sonia Basko, asked me if I would be a “Real Man Wears Pink” for Western New York to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Knowing you never say no to Sonia, I enthusiastically said yes to raise money for this worthy cause. Sadly, months later she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly after.

This year, I chose to dedicate my fundraising in her memory. Knowing the great people of West Seneca and my colleagues in New York State United Teachers, I set a goal of $5,000, which would beat the highest Western New York total from last year.

Once again, so many incredible people and organizations answered the call.

In the month of October, we raised $24,541. This was the most raised in New York State and No. 11 in the nation.

Whether you wore pink, bought a raffle ticket, or made a donation, I thank you for your generosity. I wish I could name the more than 400 individuals and organizations that donated, but it would take two pages.

I do want to recognize the West Seneca Teachers Association officers, Executive Council, New York State United Teachers officers and Board of Directors for their leadership in these efforts. I also want to thank Illona, Caroline, Beverly and Liz for all they did to set up our office auction.

Thank you for giving hope to so many who will face the awful word “Cancer.”
