Sophomore second-year varsity wrestler Adam Sorrentino sealed the team’s win with his victory in the 182-pound match. Other winners for West, which improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory, included freshman Mike Wisniewski (99), junior Josh Haueise (220), junior Jeremy Krawczyk (285), sophomore Dean Janzyck (113), sophomore Pete Walsh (132), senior Adam Janzyck (152), senior Andy Huegel (160) and senior Josh Wisniewski (170).

“Mike did a lot over the summer, and Pete is a kid who had a great year last year and, as a great athlete, is someone we’re looking for big things from this year,” coach Dave Recor said. “Andy had a breakout year for us last year, and we’re hoping he can keep that up. All three seniors, really, are off to a good start and, as captains, are being looked at for their leadership on and off the mat.”

West opened its season Nov. 30 with a 68-12 pounding of Sweet Home. Wisniewski, Walsh, Huegel, Haueise, Krawczyk, freshmen Nick Pezone (106), Dean Janzyck, sophomore Cory Kostrycki (126), junior Carmen O’Donnell (138) and Adam Janzyck all were victorious for the Indians.

“We’re definitely starting to come around a little bit as a program,” Recor said. “We’re finally able to fill all the weight classes again, and that’s helping us compete as a program again.

Aside from those who have already flexed their muscles in West’s opening matches of the season, Recor is looking to juniors Jake Michienzi (182), Lucas Tomilo (106) and Nate Woodard (138) to be solid contributors to the Indians’ resurgence this winter.

“We’re young but deep this year,” Recor said. “Just getting that win over Lancaster right away this season really got the kids excited about what we can accomplish.”

West returned to action Wednesday at Hamburg, but information about that match was not available at press time. The Indians don’t compete again, however, until they participate in Pioneer’s Tournament Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17.

“These kids are a tight knit group of kids this year,” Recor said. “A lot of them wrestled during the summer, and a lot of them play other sports together. They’re buying into the concept of their hard work paying off, and they’re all focused on their goals. They’re amped up about the season, and after the start we’ve gotten off to, it’s safe to say we’re heading in the right direction for putting together a pretty good year.” email: jnadolinski@beenews.com
