BOE appoints Nagy as president, List as VP; sets new meeting time

Nagy Nagy It was the game of “musical chairs” during last week’s reorganizational meeting when the West Seneca Board of Education made several appointments before school resumes in the fall.

Trustees Robbin D. List and Daniel A. Nagy were each nominated for president of the board, with Nagy proving victorious after a round of votes for each candidate.

Nagy immediately switched seats with Carol A. Jarczyk, president for the last three years, before taking the oath.

“It’s been 20 years since I entered as a student into the district, and it’s been an amazing 20 years,” he said after the meeting. “I’m speechless for where I’m sitting right now.”

Outside the meeting, he thanked his predecessor for her leadership and guidance, specifically citing the superintendent transition and this year’s budget as examples.

List List Nagy’s nomination, however, came in an unusual form: a somewhat pixelated Janice E. Dalbo had made the motion via Skype. A laptop streaming live video footage of the trustee, who was on vacation, had been placed on the table in front of her seat.

“You can’t see me Jan, but I’m right behind you!” Trustee Mary J. Busse loudly announced at one point during the meeting.

It was Busse, the board’s vice president, who nominated List to take over her post for the 2011-12 school year.

Another trustee, Gwen Phillips, nominated Dalbo who, in turn, yielded her nomination to List. After a unanimous vote by the board, List was officially sworn in as vice president.

Also on Monday, the board set its regular meeting schedule as follows: Aug. 8 and 22, Sept. 12, Oct. 3 and 24, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 9 and 30, Feb. 13, March 5 and 26, April 17 and May 7.

Based on a recommendation from Dalbo, the board agreed to begin all regular meetings at 6:15 p.m., as opposed to 7 p.m. in previous years. This excludes the Aug. 8 and 22 meetings, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.

All meetings are held Mondays in the boardroom at West Elementary, 1397 Orchard Park Road, with the exception of April 17, a Tuesday.

According to Superintendent Mark Crawford, changing the start time was to accommodate many of those who attend the meetings, especially youth.

“We have so many young children coming to participate in programs, and with meetings starting at 7 p.m., kids aren’t on till 7:30 or 8 p.m. ... I think the recommendation is a good one,” he said during last week’s reorganization meeting.

In other action, the 2012 annual budget vote and election will be held from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at West Seneca East Senior High School, located at 4760 Seneca St.

Prior to that, a budget presentation will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the boardroom. The public hearing on the budget will be held during the board’s May 7 meeting.

The board will wrap up the 2011-12 school year with a meeting and ceremony recognizing retirees at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, at West Seneca West Senior, 3330 Seneca St.

In other business, former board member Daniel P. Dunn was appointed as assistant superintendent of Buildings and Grounds.

Dunn had resigned from the School Board in September after serving six nonconsecutive years. He did not offer an explanation for his departure at that time; however, it was learned that the resignation was necessary for him to apply for the position of assistant superintendent.

Other appointments made by the board on Monday included Brian L. Schulz as district treasurer, Marlene A. Leone as district clerk and Marilyn Smith as district claims auditor.

Also, several board members, including newcomer Rodney Montgomery, elected to the board in May, were designated as liaisons to various committees, organizations and groups. email: kmcdowell@beenews.com
