Canisius concert pays tribute to Flight 3407 victims

Canisius College will host a concert by the chamber ensemble ANA to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the crash of Continental Flight 3407.

The event — held on the eve of the two-year anniversary — will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in Christ the King Chapel at Canisius College, 2001 Main St., Buffalo.

There is no admission fee.

The concert will feature the composition “Toward the Light (Flight 3407)” by James Piorkowski, a distinguished professor of guitar at Fredonia State College.

Additional compositions on the program include music by Piotr llyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Ned Rorem.

The event coincides with the release of the second edition of “The Still Empty Chair: Love and Loss in the Wake of Flight 3407,” an expanded collection of poems, essays, articles, prayers, photos and remembrances that honor the victims of the plane crash.

The evening will feature selected readings from the book, including a reading by Marilyn Kausner, mother of 2007 Canisius alumna Ellyce M. Kausner, 24, who died in the crash.

The event is sponsored by the college’s Fine Arts Department and offices of Campus Ministry and Student Affairs.
