West Elementary students run to Las Vegas in runners club


Matthew Steinwandel and Mara Eppolito, third-graders at West Elementary School, were the top overall runners in the school’s runners club, marking 28.25 miles and 38.25 miles respectively. Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at West Seneca West Elementary School ran more than 2,200 miles during morning runners club and in physical education class this fall.

The distance covered — 875 miles in runners club and just short of 1,400 miles in gym class — was enough to run from West Seneca to Las Vegas.

Third-grader Mara Eppolito and fourth-grader Bricen Dentice were the top two runners in morning runners club with 29.25 miles and 24.5 miles, respectively. Eppolito, at 38.25 miles, and fellow third-grader Matthew Steinwandel, at 28.25 miles, were the top overall runners.

Third-graders Katelyn Cooley and Ellie Klinko, and fifth-graders Mina Polchlopek and Pedro Iglesias all ran 10 miles during gym classes.

The fourth-graders won the grade-level competition, running a total of 779.25 miles. Top runners in each class were Violet Dybalski, Brendan Griffey, Kyle Tess, Payton Keane, Taylor Gordon, Ben Eppolito, Owen Regan, Jacob Endich, Logan Chatwood, Bricen Dentice, Julien Howard, Pedro Iglesias, Conrad Niwinski, Mara Eppolito, Brohdny Ricketts, Bellarose Milligan and Matthew Steinwandel.
