Scholar athletes earn West Seneca ‘School of Excellence’ distinction

West Seneca East and West senior high schools have each been named a 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for having 75 percent of their varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.

According to a press release from the organization, 22 teams at East and 25 teams at West qualified for this new distinction.

The purpose of the School of Excellence award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor, the release said.

Scholar-Athlete team awards were initiated in the 1991-92 school year. The School of Distinction award, established in 2002-03 and the School of Excellence award, established this year, are sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan.

Scholar-Athlete teams require that 75 percent of the team’s roster have a grade-point average of 90 or above. New this year, schools can earn a School of Excellence award by having 75 percent of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.
