Jamestown’s first-half outburst proves too tough for West cagers to overcome
Jamestown’s boys basketball team used its depth and talent to jump out to an early lead from which it would never look back in handing West Seneca West a 75-49 defeat Friday in the Southern Tier.
The Red Raiders took a 20-10 first quarter lead and then stomped on the gas in the second, outscoring West by a 26-9 margin to take a very comfortable 46-19 lead into the half. West did come back to outscore Jamestown by a point in the second half, but the Red Raiders’ early dominance proved to be too much to overcome for West.
“Jamestown just has way too much depth for us,” coach Dan Chavanne said. “They can put 10 players out there without there really being a drop off. But, even though we lost by 26, I think we were competitive. We battled all the way to the end, pulling within 12 late in the third quarter, but it’s still tough to swallow a big loss like that. We scratched and clawed the whole way, and just did the best we could.”
Max Borziellieri led the way for West with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Ahmad Abdo added 10 points. John Lobdell chipped in with nine points.
West (2-10, 0-8 division) returns to action Friday at Sweet Home, and then hosts Clarence Tuesday to inch closer to the end of the regular season.
“We have six games left on our divisional schedule, and we believe that they’re all winnable,” Chavanne said. “I think you’ll see us play like a desperate team down the stretch, and we’re hoping to be at full strength for the playoffs as we get a couple of kids back from injury.”
