West Seneca West football coach Joe Cantafio is a firm believer in hard work during the offseason making a difference once the team hits the field for the season, and he is once again pleased with the response from his players to the challenges he laid out for them after the 2009 season.

In addition, Shields, Mc- Cormick and Koepnick were named the 2010 Iron Indians, a designation that recognizes players for their dedication and leadership during the summer training.

The West players, ranging from grades 7 to 12, trained a minimum of three times a week for the entire summer to complete their offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming season. Each Practice Pack recipient received a West Football training shirt that was designed by the seniors.

Vonsik was a 1976 graduate of West Seneca West who died in an automobile accident over a decade ago. Vonsik was a three-sport athlete (football, hockey, baseball) who, according to Cantafio, was “known affectionately as ‘big guy’ because, despite not being the biggest or most talented member of his team, he was known for his work ethic.”

Vonsik’s friends and family, led by long-time friends Jim Renzi and Joe Vona, eventually began an annual scholarship in his name, and a graduating senior receives a scholarship, along with the players receiving this recognition. To date, over $20,000 in scholarships and recognition have been given.
